Holly H.I really enjoyed the domesticity of the opening scene! And the glimpse it gives of Northerner culture through Malaamig’s eyes, even though he doesn’t entirely know what he is looking at, yet. (Like the fact that this isn’t a typical village, but a meeting place of many villages; so its demographics probably are not typical, things like that.) I really like how everyone is properly wary of the dogs, without overreacting. I do look forward to hearing what the Northerners make of them. And Malaamig’s reaction to the snowies was just what it ought to be! Especially since it sounds like, even apart from their being unicorns, there aren’t other animals in the Empire that give him a frame of reference for something that big? (No Shard has elephants, or the equivalent? That’s interesting in itself.)

Reply: (Ugh, I mucked up pasting the above comment in here! It's for Pt. 2. Here is the comment for this part: Oooh, interesting stuff! Enjoyed the brief byplay with Dareg, even if I obviously don’t yet have the full history there to appreciate Birka’s hesitation. It’s also very interesting to me that Birka does seem to know what canines are, even though the trained dogs are clearly unfamiliar to the Northerners. I look forward to finding out more! (The North having foxes does account for that, of course.) What an ending, though! (by Holly H.)
