Holly H.I had read farther than this before coming back to be able to read this one, so it’s interesting to revisit this now knowing what happens later in the Lichenwold storyline! It’s nice to get this perspective on the life and loves of the Northerners. Their system is so pragmatic, but of course, human emotions are involved too, and that always makes for a tangle. Even though their situations are very different, it’s good to see how Birka and Kativa share a sort-of problem, too; though they came at it from different directions. Being raised with this culture’s expectations is one thing, but it must be hard to have the pressure of the community on you to try to have babies whether you want to or not. (And I understand it’s not that easy to conceive and carry to term, either.) That’s a lot for anyone to shoulder!
