Some characters in Torn World have impairments to overcome. The Empire and the North treat these 'problems' much differently. The Empire provides for the basic needs of disabled citizens, but tends to deny them schooling and opportunity. The North, by contrast, has very limited ability to support nonworking individuals, and therefore tries hard to find ways for everyone to contribute, regardless of their limitations. For some characters who have disabilities, see Rai, a functionally blind merchant whose family wealth and power kept him from being marginalized at a young age, and contrast him with Tenyo, a Northern domestic who lost her eyes as a child. Marai, a raiser in the North, is deaf. Kalitelm, a healer, suffers a crippling genetic dwarfism, as does her older relative, Marda. Ularki is mentally slow, but her age-mates look after her well. Within the Empire, the Duurludirj culture treats their crippled members better than the Empire as a whole does: Brelig and Megruu are Duurlidirj warsailors, and dwarf-statured people (not considered a disability) who were injured while doing battle with sea monsters.
