Concept art for the snow-unicorn.
Before the Empire, even before the Northerners, there were snow-unicorns... but they didn't start out anything close to the way they exist now.
The very first snow-unicorn was a greeting card design. The second piece was in color, with a concept of the Northerners for scale... and you can see that the snow-unicorn had a long way to go. Then followed pages and pages and pages of sketches, rough drawings, stories, and even some finished ink work of these creatures. I remained unsatisfied with the design of the snowy for several years. The tipping point to the snow-unicorn as it exists in Torn World today is It's Huge! In this particular piece (which did not have this name originally), the snow-unicorn was meant to be in the foreground, with a figure off in the distance. My perspective was unsuccessful, and one of the first comments I got was 'It's huge!' While that wasn't what I was trying to convey, it did spark the idea that the snowies were mammoth-sized creatures, and that started to solidify their design in my mind. From there, they fell neatly into place, and became the giant, furry critters that they are today.
(Nearly all of the artwork here is non-canon!)
