Since we have many artists and crafty people in our community, I could offer a $10.00 gift card to Michael's as one of the prizes. I'm sure it would be put to good use!

Then if our Fearless Leader(tm) will tell me where to mail the gift card, I'll send that along! :D

I totally want a Fearless Leader (tm) t-shirt now...

How do people feel about having contest prizes mailed directly to them from the donator?

Pros:
It cuts out the expense of mailing twice. (Since the expense of mailing from me would... pretty much fall on me, this is probably most important TO me. :P)
It could mean getting prizes faster, though I probably would collect prizes in advance of the contests in the future, so there wouldn't NEED to be a lag.

Cons:
It would mean that a prize donator gets access to the contributor's mailing address, and visa versa. Some people may feel strongly about this, discouraging them from donating or participating
Flaky donators = late or no prize. (Donators would not get their karma until the prize was received.)

Should we allow prize-winners/donators to opt to have their prizes shipped through me, but otherwise do it directly? This is something I hadn't considered yet, though I need to asap!

Also bear in mind that several of us are not in the United States. I haven't heard of Micheal's, do they have an online presence and could such a voucher be used over the internet?

Ooops. I hadn't thought of that. Sadly, none of the merchandise shown on Michaels.com can be purchased online except for their gift cards. They have stores in the U.S. and Canada...but it also says at the bottom of the gift cards page: "Gift Cards purchased via Michaels.com are only valid in U.S. Michaels' stores." :arg:

I'm open to other ideas, though!

Tangible prizes are nice of course, but I was also thinking, you know how, on EMG forums, artists get little palettes and paintbrushes next to their names. How about prize winners getting a little trophy icon or ribbon next to their name?

I really like this idea.

I'm always willing to supply a portrait of their character. Will be online only (Unless Ellen can print and send) but exclusive use to them? :)

Oo! I quite like the idea of forum trophies - we can definitely do that.

I'm also thinking that rather than specific prizes, we can have a loot pool - winners can pick 1 or 2 items (depending on the contest) from a list of donated prizes/loot. That way, someone doesn't have to worry about winning something they can't use, or already have one of. I think they will be tiered - something of a value to $5 would be tier 3, a value to $10 would be tier 2, anything higher would be tier 1. Donators would get karma based on what tier their donation was, and the various contests would have variable prizes based on their complexity.

The prize for the fauna contest, for example, will be a piece of tier 1 loot from the pool and $5 torn world credits!

(Possibly, we could even allow folks to turn in a sufficient quantity of karma for items from the loot pool? I have to think about that one some more...)

Yes, let's do that.

This is a good idea.

Hmm ... that might drain the prize pool. Howbout an option to offer this as a temporary opportunity, if we get a lot of prize offers or some of them have been sitting there a while?

Well, I'm still interested in donating $10 worth of...something! It doesn't have to be a Michael's gift card; a gift certificate from another cool store with an online and international presence would work just as well. So if anyone has ideas, I'm certainly open to them. :)

Okay, I'm going to go forward with the contest pool idea. I'm also going to experiment with the idea of letting people ship them directly and see how it works out. If that has hiccups, I'll have prizes shipped to me first.

If you would like to donate a prize, please post to this thread. Let me know the following:

~Where you are willing to ship. If you want to limit your cost of shipping to US addresses, please state so!
~The value or tier of your prize.
~Any other limitations to the prize.

If you would like to donate a custom portrait, for example, state the medium/complexity you're willing to, any subjects you'd prefer to draw or not to draw (ie no nudity or female subjects only), what kind of final product the winner might receive (just a digital image? Or a print?) and how much this would be worth if you were charging for it. If you feel more comfortable, you may simply state which tier you consider that your prize falls into:

Less than $5: Tier 3
$5-$10: Tier 2
More than $10: Tier 1

You will receive karma for your donation!

Tier 3: 5 points
Tier 2: 10 points
Tier 1: 15 points

This karma is received when the prize is received and confirmed by the recipient.

Should we discuss a karma penalty if a prize is promised and never delivered? I am inclined to subtract an equal number of points....

I have posted the relevant information into the initial post of this thread.

(Oh, and Nicole, I still think a $10 Michael's card is an awesome idea - we have plenty of US residents who would love that!)

That sounds good.

Okay, I am always willing to chip in a scrapbooked copy of one of my Torn World poems. (So far I've done one Northern, one Southern, and that Ancient one that came through a Poetry Fishbowl.) I customarily charge $5-10 for scrapbooked poetry, depending on page count (one page = $5, two pages = $10) and complexity (simple = $5, fancy = $10). I'd say call it $10/Tier 2 because for a prize I'm inclined to make this pretty fancy. (When I scrapped "The Poltergeist of Polaris" for a Strange Horizons prize, it was 3 pages trimmed and set on starscape backgrounds, with punched-out stars trailing across all of them from upper left to lower right.) If I do longer poems, 3+ pages might boost this to $15/Tier 1. For now I need to restrict this to North America.

I'll let you know if I think of other prizes that I could donate.

I'm tempted to go with this, because I've seen occasional problems with skipped prizes. But there's also an issue that sometimes the Post Orifice eats packages. If one person says they sent it but the other says they didn't receive it, that's an awkward situation to try and resolve.

Then consider it donated! That would make it a Tier 2 prize. As was stated earlier, I will only be able to ship to US residents. (Next time, I hope I'll come up with something that can cross country borders! )

I could possibly offer pottery? Make something custom would be slow, but maybe a specific piece that's thematically appropriate would work.
