Hm, I was lingering over at another writers gathering forum, and they have a weekly writing prompt. You get a short time to write a short story based upon the prompt. And you post what you write.

What I was thinking, was that somehow we could pick up this idea and begin to have a collection of snippets of the lives of those in Torn World. They could be posted under the Shorts in the main page or something, and linked to longer stories or other things that they hint at?

I hope all that made sense.

I would certainly be happy to sit down for 10-30 mins and do a nice little snippet of someone's life in the TW.

I really love moments-in-the-life and vignettes - I would love to see these! The canon board may make them non-canon if they aren't complete stand-alone stories, but I think in a lot of cases, they could be considered flash fiction. And several of them to a theme may be collected together to make something more cohesive together.

Are these prompts for particular characters? Or a particular theme? Or do you just say 'writing now for 30 minutes' and what you write is what you write?

We use a word or a phrase, I think it would be great to just, let lose for 30 mins on something. They could be alternated from the North to the South, or just have the theme/prompt open to allow anywhere in the TW world.

I kinda like the thought of after 30 mins being up, that's it. You are done. You are only allowed to edit it for typos and other mistakes, so if you want to extend upon it, it would have to be started as a separate piece.

Making them non-canon would be good. We could call them 'Inspiration pieces' or something. As it is nice to have things posted on the website, canon or not!

Well, the main idea is to get the juices flowing. If I wanted to spend more than 30 mins on something, I would just sit down and do a whole piece. This was to expand and see where things went.

I really like the idea of doing these informally, here at the forums. Those speedwrites that end up working well can be submitted for canon (or non-canon, really - I see no reason to make a special place within the non-canon category for these specifically... it's not like we're swimming in non-canon material!), or expanded into more complete stories, if there's a good seed there. I would enjoy reading these, and it would be easy enough to do that here.

I've got Sketch Fest this weekend, but maybe a day next week we can set out a prompt and let people set their timers?

Sure. I don't mind helping as much as I can.

Sunday-sunday I think is an awesome time span, and posting when they can would also add to it

I love this idea.

And you wouldn't be restricted to doing just one over that week - the same prompt could be done VERY differently for different characters, and NPCs could always be used. It could also be cross-posted (or at least alerted!) on the Torn World community LJ.

WHen did you want this to go ahead? Did you want me to post the first on in the Reader's Nook? Or is there a better place?

I'd say the Reader's Nook is a fine place for it - we have some readers who aren't contributors who might like to read along with these, and most of the other forums are restricted. Start... um, next week?
