This story is for supporters only! Here is a short excerpt to whet your appetite:

"Your first task is to sort these pickings into edible and inedible materials," said Ivara, directing the agemates to a set of baskets heaped with greenery.

Tekura helped Ularki get started. "Put the food in the blue basket. Put everything else in the black basket," he explained. She nodded vigorously. Then Tekura turned to his own work.

They were doing fine until Amarv yelled and yanked his hand out of a basket. Welts began to rise as he flapped his hand in the air. "That's not fair," he complained. "I'm allergic to strapweed!"

Author's Notes

This story came out of the April 13, 2010 Muse Fusion. It was inspired by a prompt from Comtessa. Several incidents herein have been alluded to in the character sheets for Karavai and Tekura; this is a more detailed presentation of their adulthood tests. This is a sequel to "Odds and Ends," which showed the adolescents starting to prepare for the tests.
