Five Red Beads   1508.04.09
Creators: Elizabeth Barrette (Writer), Non-Member Artist (Patron), Non-Member Author(s)
Fala's age-set pass down a treasure to Kativa's age-set.
Posted: 10/29/12      [No comments yet] ~ 159 words.

Fala rolled the small spheres
in the palm of her hand,
snowy-bone dyed with red ocher.

"We are adults now," she said.
"It is time for us to pass these
down to younger girls."

She tipped the red beads
into Kativa's hand
and smiled at her.

"Remember that these
are a woman-treasure of Itadesh,"
Fala said to Kativa.

"They were made long ago
from things as important
as the blood of our womanhood."

"Who made them?"
Kativa asked, as her
female age-mates crowded in.

"We don't know for sure,"
Fala said, "but legend says it was
Akovu's granddaughter Kofu."

"They're so old,"
Kativa whispered,
"almost back to the Upheaval."

The beads were glossy
with age and use, a patina
from the warm skin of many girls.

Kativa kept one for herself,
then handed others
to her age-mates.

"When you wear them," Fala said,
"you honor the red river that connects
all women in all times, the river of life."
