Lalya didn't think about what it would mean to change his legal gender. Here, he stands outside his mens' club. Where will his next steps take him?

This story or poem is for logged in supporters only! Here is a short excerpt to whet your appetite:

Lalya walked along the street on nineday morning, smiling and nodding to passers-by. It was a fine, clear day, and he was wearing a new dress. People-watching in his new wardrobe was a new kind of pleasure—he fancied he could tell more about a person’s character now than he could before. Just being in a dress meant he drew a reaction: good, bad, or strange. His biggest disappointment in the day was his shoes, fine brown leather shoes that he’d thought would last him for several years when he’d bought them last spring. But they clashed with his dress—not just this one, but all of them. They were quite definitely a man’s shoes.
