Fala trotted down the steps to the infant-house. She found her mother Inama with the raisers there. Marai motioned for quiet as she rocked a fussy infant; Nujin's mother was sick and staying in Snow-Unicorn House with the healers. Inama leaned over her own tenday-old son Avlar, fastening his diaper before she looked up to greet her daughter with a quick gesture. The silent language they used to compensate for Marai's deafness also made it easier to communicate without upsetting the babies.
"He still looks like a used boot," Fala whispered when she came close enough. She didn't like Avlar; he took up too much of their mother's time.
Inama snorted quietly. "So did you, after only a tenday in the world," she said. "Be nice to your baby brother. His navel cord fell off today and his tummy is tender."
